Who is Cantarico?

Welcome!

My name is Miguel Ángel, I am an artist, potter, and also known as Cantarico. My great-grandfather, whom people called “Cantarico,” was a potter (he made small pitchers), and our entire family is known by this nickname. It is an honor for me to share this name and an inspiration to express myself artistically through it.

Cantarico Alfarería is a small workshop located in Arjonilla, a charming village in the province of Jaén (Andalusia). It project was born from the desire to preserve the ceramic tradition of my town, where potters have existed for 4500 years, and from the dream of creating new concepts, valuing beauty, delicacy, and design as a sign of exquisite and exclusive work.

I have always had a strong connection with ceramics: my mother was a ceramic painter and instilled in me a love for drawing and art. This bond, combined with my artistic inclinations, led me to earn a degree in Art History from the University of Granada. Later, I dedicated myself to art as an artist (painter), holding various exhibitions in Spain, Portugal, and Germany.

.

What inspired me to start this project “Cantarico Alfarería”?

The encounter with pottery was inevitable: there were 12 ceramic businesses surrounding the house my wife and I bought, where we now live and work. The first time I felt the clay on the wheel, I knew this would be my work, and that my previous curiosities had led me to this moment, where I could fully utilize my training and learning in other areas.

I owe my training primarily to my colleagues in Arjonilla. I can say that I have a bit of each of them in my memory and my hands. This accumulated knowledge helped me join the “Registro de Artesanos de Andalucía,” which aims to value and protect artisan work.

I believe that using an object makes you more present. It can be something very special that brightens your breakfast, delights your guests, or surprises as a gift. Therefore, I strive to make my pieces as beautiful as possible, so that the person who owns them can form a connection with them.

Our new project

Modelando entre olivos

Modeling among Olives

“Modelando entre Olivos” is a unique proposal that combines ceramic craftsmanship with cultural immersion in Arjonilla. This project stems from the passion of my partner, Inma, a tour guide, and we open the doors of our home and workshop to offer creative and authentic experiences.

Our Workshops

Our workshops range from 2-hour sessions to 6-day retreats, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the ancient art of artisanal ceramics. In each session, attendees not only learn modeling and decorating techniques but also connect with local history and culture, discovering Arjonilla’s rich pottery tradition, recognized as a Cultural Heritage.

A Creative and Cultural Experience

At “Modelando entre Olivos,” we believe in the importance of taking time to create with hands and heart. We offer a space where patience and care are reflected in each piece, providing an experience that nourishes both body and soul. Come and discover the magic of ceramics and the beauty of Jaén, surrounded by the serenity of olive trees.
